What is Vaping?
You may have seen people out and about with these tubes and boxes blowing large clouds and wonder to yourself what are they doing well they’re vaping. So what is vaping Actually.
Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor made from liquid that is heated in an electronic device or electronic cigarette as it’s commonly known.
The liquid in this device can contain flavors and nicotine.
So why would you want to vape why not just smoke cigarettes like we’ve been doing for years.
Well vaping plays a big role as a cessation device or device to help people quit smoking completely.
Now a lot of people ask themselves but isn’t vaping just as harmful as smoking.
This question was answered by a recent independent study by the public health England which found vaping to be 95 percent safer than smoking.
Vaping does not contain nearly as many carcinogenic chemicals as cigarettes and though we’re still understanding the long-term effects they are less likely to cause cancer like smoking.
Benefits of Vaping
There’s many benefits to vaping.
- Vaping can help smokers successfully quit smoking. All smokers have a quitting story about when they tried to quit but it didn’t last.
- Vaping can have a very lasting effect to help smokers finally quit. Vaping has been shown to be 95 percent safer than smoking overall and future studies may help solidify this as a fact.
- Vaping may still be in its infancy but there are far less negative effects than smoking. It also keeps you from smelling badly unlike smoking.
- After you stopped smoking altogether and started vaping you now can’t stand the smell of smoke and overall my taste and smell senses have vastly improved.
- Vaping can also be more cost effective over time versus smoking.
- There’s a higher upfront cost to start vaping but over time you can actually save money especially since you can make your own liquid and coils for your vaping devices.
Vaping devices are made up of the liquid that is vaporized.
The atomizer which heats up the liquid into vapor and the battery which powers the atomizer.
The liquid or a liquid is made up of four ingredients.
Vegetable glycerin is a thick liquid that is the vapor base in the liquid it’s naturally sweet by itself and can be vaped without any added ingredients.
VG is an organic liquid from plants which is a common ingredient in cosmetics and can be safely consumed.
Propylene glycol is a thin liquid that is the flavor carrier in the liquid and provides the throat hit which replicates smoking. Some people may be allergic to PG but liquid can be made PG free.
PG is commonly found in inhalers for medication and cosmetic products as well as other products that are consumed.
The flavoring in liquid is the same that’s used in food and candy.
The flavors are typically in a PG base but they also come in other bases as well if you have a PG allergy.
The nicotine used in liquid is to offset smokers nicotine consumption from cigarettes to vaping. Nicotine is not required in the liquid to vape.
The nicotine in the liquid is available at many different strengths. Nicotine levels in the liquid depend on how much you smoke and what kind of device you’re using.
These are the different strengths of nicotine that can be available in your liquid from 0 to 24 milligrams.
12 milligrams is a good average strength to start with if you’re new to vaping and you’re trying to quit smoking.
For heavy smokers a higher nicotine strength may be required to offset the nicotine consumption from smoking to vaping. The strength of nicotine also depends heavily on what device you’re using.
Some devices only vaporize a small amount of liquid at a time while others vaporize a much bigger amount.
A low wattage device will only vaporize a small amount so a higher nicotine strength may be required.
Here you can see with a low wattage device there is only a small amount of vapor produced.
A higher nicotine strength will be required for heavy smokers to get the same nicotine consumption as a cigarette.
With a higher wattage device a lower nicotine strength is needed since you’re vaporizing much more of the liquid.
Here you can see that on just one pole there’s a massive amount of vapor produced.
Vaping this much liquid at a high nicotine strength can cause you to get dizzy so lower strengths are recommended for a higher rate of consumption.
VG to PG ratio is a term you may hear thrown around when referring to liquid.
This is the ratio of vegetable glycerin to propylene glycol and the liquid.
A higher amount of gives more cloud production and brings smoothness to the liquid but it may lack in flavor
a higher PG ratio will have less cloud production and we’ll get more throat it like a cigarette but there will also be more flavor.
The atomizer is a metal coil that heats a full liquid into vapor. Atomizers are commonly referred to as coils. They can be made of different metal types such as kanthal nichrome nickel titanium and stainless steel. The most common is Kanthal.
So if you’re looking to start vaping you’ll most likely start off with Kanthal coils.
The coils can be pre-made which you can buy in packs or you can build them yourself using wire and organic cotton.
There’s a wide variety of atomizers for all styles of vaping tanks are the most common for newer vapors since they carry the liquid around inside and make it easy to see how much is inside and when to refill the liquid
There’s also dripping atomizers where you continually drip liquid onto the coil when it dries up.
The battery is an important part of the vaping device.
Some vaping devices have a battery built-in and you charged through the device.
Others require external batteries to be placed inside the device and are charged externally.
As a newer vapor you’ll most likely get a device with a built in battery that comes in a starter kit.
A very common reference you may hear with vaping is mouth to lung or direct lung.
These are different inhalation styles that come with different vaping devices.
Mouth to lung is a tight draw which is pulled by the mouth than inhaled into the lungs which is similar to a cigarette inhalation.
Here you can see a mouth to lung device where the vapor is drawn by the mouth and then inhaled. A direct long inhale is a loose draw which is pulled directly into the lungs.
This requires a lot of airflow since the lungs pull stronger than the mouth. This type of inhalation is similar to a hookah
Here you can see a direct lung inhale where the vapor is pulled straight into the lungs. A lot of airflow is needed for this type of draw but this is good if you’re looking for a vape with more cloud production.
A common starter device is a disposable electronic cigarette which has a high nicotine content and restricted airflow to mimic a cigarette. These are commonly referred to as a cig alike.
These can be found where cigarettes are sold such as gas stations and convenience stores
For a lot of smokers this may be their only with vaping.
While it doesn’t represent vaping as a whole personally I think it’s a good start for anyone looking to get into vaping from smoking.
Starter kits can be found at stores that specialize in vaping products.
This kit will have a simple rechargeable battery and refillable tank so you can fill it with any liquid of your choosing.
These tanks typically last a week before needing to be replaced this is a great starting point if you’re coming from smoking.
These starter kits range from fifteen to twenty dollars and they’re perfect for newer users.

Sub-ohm kits are more advanced than typical starter kits.
Using external batteries having larger wattage ranges and resistant settings.
If this all sounds like a lot then a regular starter kit might be best for you to start with these kits do provide a lot of airflow and produce much more vapor than typical starter kits.
Many vapors do start out with a kit like this but there is a learning curve.
It is highly recommend researching these devices before going all out and buying a higher-end device and remember there is no such thing as the wrong vape.
There’s so many different products out there just find the one that fits you best and makes you happiest.
The important thing to focus on is the fact that you are no longer smoking.
There is a very strong hobbyist side to vaping but don’t lose sight of the fact that you’re taking a very important step to improving your health.

Vaping has helped thousands if not millions of people quit smoking.
Not only have they proven to be a safer alternative to traditional tobacco products but these devices can also help reduce their daily nicotine intake.
The big question is just how much safer is vaping over cigarettes.
A new survey that just surfaced reveals that 45% of the United States still believe that vaping is just as harmful as smoking.

Smoking cigarettes is the result of burning tobacco obviously, because what you’re inhaling is from a combustible product it produces smoke.
This smoke contains nicotine but it also contains tar carbon monoxide and a plethora of other chemicals
A common misconception is that the nicotine itself is the culprit of many different diseases that you can get from cigarettes but that’s not quite the case.

Though only time will tell the long-term effects of vaping from what we know now it’s a safer alternative to cigarettes and instead of trying to slander vaping we really should be pushing smokers towards this potentially life-saving alternative.
